“Modern dandy” is the series of photographs made by the New York photographer and director Sophia Wallace depicting the dandy aesthetics and ethic – often misunderstood as superficial – and subverting the paradigm of gender, its conventional limits for giving rise to “a space of creative possibilities” – as the artist asserts – “in ways that reach far beyond the narrow binary constructs of masculine and feminine”. I like to let the artist talk about her work, the smashing exploration she made and its laudable and liberatory purpose: “artists like Oscar Wilde, Charles Baudelaire, H. H. Munro and less recognized women as the painter Romaine Brookes and their cohorts found Dandyism to be a liberatory space not only for appearance, but more importantly for a life of independence that did not necessarily adhere to a deterministic heterosexual model of marriage and children. Examples of modern dandies include Andy Warhol, Quentin Crisp, Grace Jones, Tilda Swinton and Janelle Monae. My many years focusing on gender, race, and constructions of beauty led me to dandyism as a radical position for art making and social critique. Indeed, dandyism’s subversive aesthetics of beauty disrupts normative gender in fascinating ways. Beauty is defined in almost all contexts as the domain of femininity which is commonly understood as frivolous, weak and passive. The dandy is neither traditionally feminine or masculine. Rather the dandy is an aestheticized androgyny available to men, women and transgender individuals. Herein it lies it’ s power and it’s danger”.

“Modern dandy” è la serie di fotografie realizzata dalla fotografa e regista newyorkese Sophia Wallace che ritrae l’ estetica ed etica dandy – sovente fraintesa come superficiale – e sovverte il paradigma del gender, i suoi limiti convenzionali per dar vita a “uno spazio di possibilità creative” – come afferma l’ artista – “in modi che giungono ben oltre gli angusti costrutti binari del maschile e femminile”. Mi piace far parlare l’ artista del suo lavoro, la formidabile esplorazione da lei realizzata e la sua lodevole e liberatoria finalità: “artisti come Oscar Wilde, Charles Baudelaire, H. H. Munro e donne meno note quali la pittrice Romaine Brookes e i loro amici ritenevano che il dandyismo fosse uno spazio liberatorio non solo per l’ apparenza, ma in modo molto più rilevante per una vita di indipendenza che non dovesse necessariamente aderire a un deterministico modello eterosessuale di matrimonio e bambini. Esempi di moderni dandies includono Andy Warhol, Quentin Crisp, Grace Jones, Tilda Swinton e Janelle Monae. I plurimi anni in cui mi sono concentrata sul gender, la razza e le costruzioni della bellezza mi hanno condotto al dandyismo nelle vesti di una posizione radicale per fare arte e critica sociale. Infatti la sovversiva etica del dandyismo arresta il gender regolatorio in affascinanti modi. La bellezza è definita in quasi tutti i contesti come il dominio della femminilità che è comunemente intesa come frivola, debole e passiva. Il dandy non è tradizionalmente femminile o maschile. In questa sede sta che esso è potere ed è pericolo”.
