“South is nothing”, the first feature film by the brilliant Reggio Calabria filmmaker Fabio Mollo, comes in Rome, after the success got at the Toronto Film Festival and runs in the Rome Film Festival. The movie, a drama which is full of feelings and hopes, set in Reggio Calabria, produced by B24 film in collaboration with RAI Cinema and interpreted by Vinicio Marchioni, Miriam Karlkvist and Valentina Lodovini, will be screened on 13th November – at 11:30 am, a screening for schools featuring the movie in the section “Alice nella città” – at 4:30 pm at the Auditorium, Sala Santa Cecilia and will be in the cinemas since 28 November. The film – which is the development of short film “Giganti” -, talks about the big pain and confusion of a family, a sister, Grazia, a teenager who lost her brother. A personal suffering overlapping with an atavic suffering, the degrading emptiness of a community being hard put where “South is nothing” – as the granny of Pietro asserts – “and nothing happens”. A provocative assertion being the title of movie about which movie’s title Fabio Mollo talked in the following interview.
How does it arises “The South is nothing”, a drama talking about a sad status quo as well as love and hope?
“The inspiration of movie is its own title “The South is nothing”. It’s a provocation to that mentality under the sign of code of silence and resignation with which many generations have educated. It’s a story of young anger and breach of that mentality. It’s a dramatic movie having strong elements of magic realism”.
The film is set in Reggio Calabria, city where – like me – you are born , what are the past and present memories, emotions connected to it?
“I think and hope the movie doesn’t talk just only about Reggio Calabria, but it tells about the story of a generation as a whole. Reggio it’s a starting point, where the Straight of Messina, with its strips of land being extremely close, but separated forever, becomes metaphor of movie’s characters.”
What are the ideas you are working on?
“To make always projects that are ambitious and necessary”.

Il film, una dramma pieno di sentimenti e speranze, ambientato a Reggio Calabria, prodotto da B24 film in collaborazione con RAI Cinema e interpretato da Vinicio Marchioni, Miriam Karlkvist e Valentina Lodovini, sarà proiettato martedì 13 novembre – alle ore 11:30, una proiezione per le scuole essendo il film incluso nella sezione “Alice nella città” – alle ore 16:30 presso l’ Auditorium, Sala Santa Cecilia e sarà nei cinema a partire dal 28 novembre. La pellicola – che è il consolidamento del cortometraggio “Giganti” -, parla del grande dolore e confusione di una famiglia, di una sorella, Grazia, una teenager che ha perso il proprio fratello. Una sofferenza personale che si sovrappone a un male atavico, il degradante vuoto di una comunità che è economicamente in difficoltà in cui “il sud è niente” – come afferma la nonna di Pietro – “e niente succede”. Una provocatoria affermazione che è il titolo del film di cui Fabio Mollo ha parlato, nell’ intervista che segue.
Come nasce il Sud e’ niente, un dramma che parla di un triste status quo, ma anche di amore e speranza?
“L’ispirazione del film è il titolo stesso “Il sud è niente”. È una provocazione a quella mentalità di omertà e rassegnazione alla quale sono state educate intere generazioni. È una storia di rabbia giovane e di rottura nei confronti di quella mentalità. E’ un film drammatico, ma con forti elementi di realismo magico”.
La pellicola e’ girata a Reggio Calabria, città in cui – come me – sei nato, quali sono i ricordi le emozioni, presenti e passate che sono legati a essa?
“Credo e spero che il film non parli solo di Reggio Calabria, ma racconti la storia di una intera generazione. Reggio è un punto di partenza, dove lo stretto di Messina, con i suoi lembi di terra che sono estremamente vicini, ma per sempre separati, diventa metafora dei personaggi del film.”
Quali sono le idee a cui stai lavorando?
“Fare sempre progetti che siano ambiziosi e necessari”.
