Brian Butler, genius filmmaker, performer artist and musician – who featured in many worldwide museums and renowned art events, as well as in the fashion scene, as it is evidenced by the short film he made by teaming with Kenneth Anger years ago for the brand Missoni – explores art and magick (as he uses to name magic, word reminding the one which has used by Aleister Crowley, though the artist wants differentiating from that) through his work. This is the core of his life and work, giving rise to an intense, strong imagery, where it shines the cult of senses, perception and its subversion, being some leitmotivs marvelously embodied in his works as his last one, “Choronzon working destroys minds”, a ritualistic performance enhanced by paradoxical sound frequencies, atmospherical ionization, strobostopic effects, electrostatic generators, augmented realities and the real volcano which will be staged in Stromboli on 17th July 2015 and accompanied by the screening of the cult film by the visionary Kenneth Anger “Lucifer Rising” and it will open the 2015 edition of Volcano Extravaganza, “In favour of a total eclipse”, not to be missed happening, organized by the Fiorucci Art Trust and curated by Milovan Farronato. Brian, nice individual – who is currently in Stromboli to end the works for performance – talked about this project as well as about the meaning magic in the short following interview.
Magic as source of culture, consciousness and inspiration, to which extent it does feature in your life?
“100 percent – it does with everyone really – the important thing to realize is every act is a magical act”.
Art and magic, could you talk me about this dialogue which is impressed in your work?
“Magick(spelled with a k to differentiate it from vulgar forms by Aleister Crowley) is an Art and Science. Both of these to me are the same”.
Could you talk me about with your work with Kenneth Anger, how did it start?
“It started like most things -at the beginning. We had a few things in common such as being on time and communicating without speaking”.
You will star in the 2015 edition of art event Volcano Extravaganza, “In favour of a total eclipse”, presenting a performance, what is the idea which is embodied in it?
“I decided to take on the most dangerous and powerful occult ritual ever known. The evocation Choronzon”(I quote Aleister Crowley to depict the core of this ritual: “the name of the Dweller in the Abyss is Choronzon, but he is not really an individual. The Abyss is empty of being; it is filled with all possible forms, each equally inane, each therefore evil in the only true sense of the word-that is, meaningless but malignant, in so far as it craves to become real. These forms swirl senselessly into haphazard heaps like dust devils, and each such chance aggregation asserts itself to be an individual and shrieks, “I am I!” though aware all the time that its elements have no true bond; so that the slightest disturbance dissipates the delusion just as a horseman, meeting a dust devil, brings it in showers of sand to the earth.”).
What are your forthcoming projects?
“After I leave the Stromboli island I am travelling to London for working on my feature film “The Great Beast”, a biopic based on the life of Aleister Crowley”.

Brian Butler, geniale regista, performer artist e musicista – protagonista in vari musei di tutto il mondo e in rinomati eventi d’ arte, come anche nell’ ambito della moda, come felicemente dimostra il cortometraggio da lui realizzato anni fa collaborando con Kenneth Anger per il brand Missoni – esplora arte e “magick” ovvero la magia attraverso il suo lavoro (così è solito chiamarla, lemma che richiama il termine usato da Aleister Crowley, benché l’ artista voglia da esso differenziarsi). Questo è il cuore della sua vita e della sua opera che dà vita a un intenso, forte immaginario in cui splende il culto dei sensi, la percezione e la sua sovversione, alcuni motivi ricorrenti racchiusi nei suoi lavori, come l’ ultimo “Choronzon working destroys minds”( “Choronzon lavorando distrugge le menti”, una performance ritualistica arricchita da paradossali frequenze sonore, ionizzazione atmosferica, effetti strobostopici, generatori elettrostatici e dal vulcano che sarà allestita a Stromboli il 17 luglio 2015, sarà accompagnata dalla proiezione della pellicola di culto del visionario Kenneth Anger “Lucifer Rising” e aprirà l’ edizione 2015 di Volcano Extravaganza, “In favour of a total eclipse”, happening imperdibile, organizzato dal Fiorucci Art Trust e curato da Milovan Farronato. Brian, simpatica individualità che è al momento a Stromboli a ultimare i lavori per la performance – ha parlato di questo progetto ed anche di arte e magia nella breve intervista che segue.
Magia come fonte di cultura, consapevolezza e ispirazione, in che misura è protagonista della tua vita?
“ Il 100 per cento – lo è davvero per tutti – la cosa importante da capire è che ogni singola azione è un’ atto di magia”.
Arte e magia, mi parli di questo dialogo che è impresso nel tuo lavoro?
“Magick(sillabato con una k per differenziarlo dalle forme volgari di Aleister Crowley) è un’ arte ed una Scienza. Ambedue sono la medesima cosa per me”.
Mi racconti del tuo lavoro con Kenneth Anger, come ha avuto inizio?
“É cominciato come la maggior parte delle cose – in principio. Avevamo un paio di cose in comuni come l’ essere puntuali e il comunicare senza parlare”.
Sarai protagonista dell’ edizione 2015 dell’ evento d’ arte Volcano Extravaganza, “In favour of a total eclipse”, presentando una performance, qual’ è l’ idea in essa racchiusa?
“Ho deciso di impegnarmi nel più pericoloso e potente rituale occulto che sia mai stato conosciuto. L’ evocazione Choronzon”(cito Aleister Crowley per dipingere il nucleo di questo rituale: il nome dell’ Abitante dell’ Abisso è Choronzon, ma non è in realtà un individuo. L’ Abisso è privo di essere; è colmo di tutte le forme possibili, ognuna ugualmente insulsa, ognuna perciò malvagia nel vero senso della parola –ciò è, inutile ma maligno, fin quando non desidera diventare reale. Queste forme vorticano alla cieca all’ interno di mucchi disordinati come turbini, ed ognuna di queste possibilità di aggregazione afferma di essere un individuo e urla, “Io sono io!”, pur consapevoli tutto il tempo che i propri elementi non abbiano un vero legame; al punto che il più sottile disturbo fa sparire la delusione come un fantino, che incontra un turbine, lo porta in pioggia di sabbia sulla terra.”).
Quali sono i tuoi prossimi progetti?
“Dopo Volcano Extravaganza, mi dirigerò a Londra per lavorare al mio lungometraggio “The Great Beast”( “La Grande Bestia”), un film biografico che si basa sulla vita di Aleister Crowley”.
