Weeks ago I talked about the dignification of trans people into the mainstream culture, considering also Caitlyn Jenner’ s featuring in the cover of Vanity Fair, circumstance I welcomed. I also talked about it with one of the most emblematic artists and intellectuals from the queercore movement, the filmmaker, photographer and author Bruce LaBruce who, instead – though he appreciated my hopeful point of view under the sign of freedom and dignity for all, something going beyond gender, mere cliché on which the conventional thinking and dialectics was built -, was very skeptical, as all happened relying to mainstream’s standards, that set of values or rather non-values that are the core of its culture. Days ago it appeared on Dazed Digital a piece where an iconic and visionary artist, the pandrogynous Genesis P-Orridge – front-man of Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV, being part of the aristocracy of underground and he is one of the father of industrial music -, explained why Caitlyn Jenner cannot be a spokerperson. This article I am pleased to share embodies some relevant issues concerning the gender identity as well as a consciousness, arising from the vibrant Genesis’ thought: “binary systems are the critical problem, the either/or, the black/white, gay/straight, Christian/Muslim, you name it. Maybe the problem is that we haven’t evolved into a unified being; not male or female but both. The human body is not the person. Identity is the way the brain operates; it’s memories, it’s sensory input and output. The mind is the person”.
“When Caitlyn Jenner had the most glamorous coming-out moment of all time via the cover ofVanity Fair, it marked a historical moment for many reasons. Not only did it catapult trans awareness to the mainstream, but it also displayed a huge amount of courage, and set an example of inclusivity in a world still blighted by transphobia.
However, as many rightly pointed out, Caitlyn’s experience as a rich, white American trans person is radically different to the experience of trans people without her celebrity status and situation, particularly trans people of colour from low-income backgrounds, who are much more likely to experience violence and hate crimes based on their identity.
In an hour-long podcast discussion with Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace, pandrodgynous musician, avant-garde artist and Throbbing Gristle icon Genesis Breyer P-Orridge echoed the idea that Caitlyn Jenner should be careful about referring to herself as a spokesperson for the wider trans community.
“Apparently Caitlyn is already saying things like, ‘It’s so difficult being a woman and having to decide which designer gown to wear when you go out at night’… That’s not being a woman, that’s being a glamorous Hollywood figure and that’s not how it is for most people. There are lots of teenage kids on the streets of New York who are hustling and risking Aids because they need to get money to transition, and they’re prepared to risk their lives because it’s such a deep need, and they don’t have that back-up system.”
“We’re not saying Caitlyn isn’t courageous in terms of the personal experience, but the way it’s being presented by the media could end up being really, really damaging. We actually saw one thing on the news and Caitlyn’s going, ‘I feel like I can be a spokesperson for the transgendered community.’ And later on she says, ‘I actually don’t know any transsexuals.’ What the fuck, she’s going to be spokesperson? She hasn’t got a clue! She’s been living in her own bubble with her own issues, dealing with them, but she doesn’t understand what it’s like for the ladyboys in Bangkok, or the transsexuals in Japan or people in Russia. She doesn’t know! Stop being a spokesperson.”
Genesis, who transitioned in 1993 to become pandrogynous, or non-gender specific, then shared their own perspective on gender identity. “Binary systems are the critical problem, the either/or, the black/white, gay/straight, Christian/Muslim, you name it. GENESIS P-ORRIDGE: “CAITLYN JENNER NON É UNA PORTAVOCE”
Tempo fa ho parlato della dignificazione dei trans all’ interno della cultura di mainstream, prendendo in considerazione anche l’ apparizione di Caitlyn Jenner sulle copertine di Vanity Fair, circostanza da me accolta con plauso. Ne ho pure parlato con uno degli artisti e intellettuali più emblematici del movimento queercore, il regista, fotografo e scrittore Bruce LaBruce che invece – pur apprezzando il mio punto di vista, pieno di speranza e all’ insegna della libertà e dignità di tutti, qualcosa che va ben oltre il gender, mero cliché su cui si è strutturato il pensiero e la dialettica convenzionale – era molto scettico, poiché tutto accadeva in base ai crismi del mainstream quella serie di valori o meglio disvalori su cui si basa la sua cultura. Giorni fa è apparso su Dazed Digital uno scritto in cui un iconico e visionario artista, il pandrogino Genesis P-Orridge – leader dei Throbbing Gristle e degli Psychic TV, che fa parte dell’ aristocrazia dell’ underground ed è uno dei padri della musica industrial -, ha spiegato le ragioni per cui Caitlyn Jenner non possa essere una portavoce. Questo articolo, che sono lieta di condividere, racchiude alcune rilevanti questioni inerenti l’ identità di genere e anche una consapevolezza che nasce dal vibrante pensiero di Genesis: “i sistemi binari sono il problema critico, l’ uno/l’ altro, il nero/ bianco, il gay/eterosessuale, il cristiano/musulmano come si vogliano chiamare. Forse la questione è che non ci siamo evoluti in un essere unito, che non è né maschile, né femminile, ma è ambedue. Il corpo umano non è la persona. L’ identità è il modo in cui il cervello opera, è fatta di ricordi, è input ed output sensoriale. La mente è la persona”.
“Quando Caitlyn Jenner ha avuto il momento di coming-out più glamour di tutti i tempi per effetto della copertina su Vanity Fair, ciò ha rappresentato un momento storico per molteplici ragioni. Non ha soltanto catapultato la coscienza trans nel mainstream, ma ha anche mostrato una enorme dose di coraggio, e stabilito un’ esempio di inclusività in un mondo che è ancora segnato dalla transfobia.
In ogni caso, come molti hanno giustamente osservato, l’ esperienza di Caitlyn da trans americana, ricca, bianca è del tutto diversa dall’ esperienza dei trans che sono privi del suo stato di celebrità e della sua occupazione, in particolare i trans di colore provenienti da contesti a basso reddito, che presumibilmente sperimentano molto di più la violenza e i reati di odio che si basano sulla loro identità.
Nel podcast di una conversazione di un’ ora con Laura Jane Grace di Against Me! , il musicista pandrogino, artista d’ avanguardia ed icona dei Throbbing Gristle Genesis Breyer P-Orridge ha ribadito che Caitlyn Jenner dovrebbe fare attenzione a descriversi come una portavoce per la più grande comunità trans.
“Apparentemente Caitlyn sta già dicendo cose come, ‘è così difficile essere una donna e dovere decider quale abito da sera di quale designer indossare per uscire la sera’… Questo non è essere una donna, è essere un personaggio hollywoodiano glamour e ciò non è così per molte persone. Ci sono un sacco di teenager sulle strade di New York che si prostituiscono e rischiano l’ Aids perché hanno bisogno di avere soldi per il processo di transizione, e sono pronti a rischiare le loro vite perché il loro è un bisogno talmente profondo, e sono privi di quel sistema di back-up.”
“Non stiamo affermando che Caitlyn non sia coraggiosa in termini di esperienza personale, ma il modo in cui ciò è presentato dai mass-media potrebbe essere davvero, notevolmente dannoso. Attualmente abbiamo visto una cosa nelle cronaca e l’ uscita di Caitlyn, ‘sento di poter essere un portavoce per la comunità transgender.’ E dopo afferma, ‘in verità non conosco alcun transessuale.’ E che cazzo, sta per diventare un portavoce? Ne ha la benché minima idea! Sta vivendo nella sua bolla con le sue problematiche, che affronta, ma non comprende quello che passano i ladyboys a Bangkok, o i transessuali in Giappone oppure la gente in Russia. Non lo sa! Smettila di essere un portavoce.
