FASHION, UNDERGROUND CULTURE & ITS ICON: GENESIS P-ORRIDGE WILL STAR IN MARC JACOBS’ NEXT CAMPAIGN

I am pleased of sharing the following piece, released days ago on Dazed Digital, the virtual platform of British magazine Dazed & Confused talking about the next campaign of Marc Jacobs – where the mainstream meets the aristocracy of underground – which will feature Genesis P-Orridge, relevant persona, icon of underground culture, vibrant artist, genius musician (front-man of Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV) and guru or rather founder of TOPY (the Temple Ov Psychic Youth, embodying and developing the ideas of Aleister Crowley, later evolved into Autonomous Individuals Network (AIN). Since 2010 P-Orridge activated the One True Topi Tribe, a reactivation of sorts of the original Temple Ov Psychick Youth, focused on creating an intentional artists community).

“An image posted to Instagram saw the musician and performance artist looking very like the models at the designer’s most recent show

“When you just can’t wait to LEAK.” So wrote Marc Jacobs last night on Instagram, regramming a photo of musical and artistic icon Genesis P-Orridge to his account – and thus seeming to reveal h/er ( en: it would be more correct “V”, pronoun, being its use recognized by Oxford Dictionary for meaning all the ones like the transgender and others would be neutral or fluid to the gender or rather the conventional categories male and female, but I held the text as it was, as I didn’t write it, I just only shared it. Furthermore the artist is known for featuring as panelist of talks and symposiums that were held in famous universities as Yale where V talked about V’s experience, being Pandrogynous, entity formed by V and the late wife Lady Jaye) as one of the faces for his upcoming campaign. In the image, P-Orridge (who found notoriety as part of performance-art-slash-music group COUM Transmissions, as well as with acts including Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV) was pictured with the very particular pin-curled hairstyle, dark eyes and thin brows donned by models at the designer’s AW16 show in March.

Since AW15, Marc Jacobs has used his campaigns as a platform to gather his inspirational band of friends and muses, preferring to drop the images directly on Instagram rather than send around press releases. Past stars have included names as diverse as Winona Ryder, Cher and Willow Smith.

Apparently, the pandrogynous icon P-Orridge (who underwent a series of surgeries from 1993 with late wife Lady Jaye Breyer to transform themselves into one person) spent h/er time on set chatting to Susan Sarandon and bonding over their shared friendship with the Timothy Leary. Leary – the writer and countercultural icon known for publicising psychedelic drugs in the 60s and 70s – and P-Orridge struck up a friendship after Genesis was forced into exile from the UK, with the academic inviting h/er to stay at his Californian home.

It’s not the first time P-Orridge has dipped h/er toes into the industry – having recently starred in a Dazed-debuted video for non-demographic denim label 69 and teamed up with Yang Li for a collaborative collection. However, s/he’s keen to keep it at arm’s length. “My entire life has been avoiding fashion whenever possible except for a couple of exceptions”,”s/he told us back in February – but we can safely assume Jacobs’ work will be one such exception”.

Mi rallegra condividere lo scritto che segue, pubblicato giorni fa da Dazed Digital, la piattaforma virtuale del magazine inglese Dazed & Confused che parla della prossima campagna pubblicitaria di Marc Jacobs – in cui il mainstream incontra l’ aristocrazia dell’ underground – di cui sarà protagonista Genesis P-Orridge, personaggio emblematico, icona della cultura underground, vibrante artista, geniale musicista (leader dei Throbbing Gristle e degli Psychic TV) e guru o meglio fondatore del TOPY , the Temple Ov Psychic Youth, che racchiude in sé e consolida le idee di Aleister Crowley, successivamente evoluto nell’ Autonomous Individuals Network (AIN). A partire dal 2010 P-Orridge ha attivato la One True Topi Tribe, una riattivazione delle sorti dell’ originario Temple Ov Psychick Youth, incentrata sul creare una comunità intenzionale di artisti.

Un’ immagine postata su Instagram rivela che il musicista e performance artist sembra molto simile alle modelle della sfilata più recente del designer.

“Quando non vedi l’ora che SI VENGA A SAPERE”. Così ha scritto Marc Jacobs la notte scorsa su Instagram, condividendo una foto dell’ icona musicale e artistica Genesis P-Orridge tramite il suo account – e che così sembra svelare che lui/lei ( nda: sarebbe più corretto “V”, pronome il cui uso è riconosciuto dall’ Oxford Dictionary per indicare tutti coloro che come i trans e altri siano neutrali o fluidi al gender ovvero alle categorie convenzionali maschile e femminile, ma ho mantenuto il testo così come è, non essendo da me stato scritto, ma condiviso. L’ artista peraltro è noto per aver parlato nelle vesti di panelist durante talk e simposi a prestigiose università quali Yale della sua esperienza, dell’ esser Pandrogino, creatura formata da lui e dalla defunta moglie Lady Jaye) sia uno dei volti della sua prossima campagna pubblicitaria. Nella foto, P-Orridge (che si è fatto conoscere per esser parte del collettivo artistico-musicale COUM Transmissions, come anche dei Throbbing Gristle e degli Psychic TV) appariva con la medesima particolare acconciatura ondulata, gli occhi scuri e le sopracciglia sottili che avevano le modelle alla sfilata della collezione autunno/inverno 2016 a marzo.

A partire dalla collezione autunno/inverno 2015, Marc Jacobs ha usato le sue campagne pubblicitarie come una piattaforma per riunire il suo gruppo ispiratore di amici e muse, preferendo far circolare le immagini direttamente su Instagram piuttosto che inviarle in giro per uffici stampa. Le star precedenti avevano compreso nomi talmente diversi Winona Ryder, Cher e Willow Smith.

Apparentemente, l’ icona pandrogina P-Orridge (che si è sottoposto a una serie di interventi chirurgici dal 1993 con la defunta moglie Lady Jaye Breyer per trasformarsi in un’ unica persona) ha passato il tempo sul set a chiacchierare con Susan Sarandon ed affezionarsi alla loro amicizia condivisa con Timothy Leary. Leary – lo scrittore e icona della contro-cultura noto per pubblicizzare droghe psichedeliche negli anni ‘60 e ‘70 – e P-Orridge sono diventati amici dopo che Genesis era stato costretto all’ esilio dal Regno Unito, è stato invitato dall’ accademico a stare nella sua casa in California.

Non è la prima volta che P-Orridge si è trovato a fare cose nell’ industria della moda – essendo recentemente stato protagonista di un video di esordio di Dazed per l’ etichetta di denim non-demografica 69 ed ha collaborato con Yang Li per una collezione collaborativa. In ogni modo, costei/costui (nda: V) è così intelligente a mantenere una certa distanza. “In tutta la mia vita ho evitato la moda ogni volta che potevo escluse soltanto un paio di eccezioni”, così ci diceva a febbraio – ma ovviamente possiamo di cerco dedurre che il lavoro di Jacobs costituirà una di queste eccezioni”.

GENESIS P-ORRIDGE: “CAITLYN JENNER IS NOT A SPOKERPERSON”

Weeks ago I talked about the dignification of trans people into the mainstream culture, considering also Caitlyn Jenner’ s featuring in the cover of Vanity Fair, circumstance I welcomed. I also talked about it with one of the most emblematic artists and intellectuals from the queercore movement, the filmmaker, photographer and author Bruce LaBruce who, instead – though he appreciated my hopeful point of view under the sign of freedom and dignity for all, something going beyond gender, mere cliché on which the conventional thinking and dialectics was built -, was very skeptical, as all happened relying to mainstream’s standards, that set of values or rather non-values that are the core of its culture. Days ago it appeared on Dazed Digital a piece where an iconic and visionary artist, the pandrogynous Genesis P-Orridge – front-man of Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV, being part of the aristocracy of underground and he is one of the father of industrial music -, explained why Caitlyn Jenner cannot be a spokerperson. This article I am pleased to share embodies some relevant issues concerning the gender identity as well as a consciousness, arising from the vibrant Genesis’ thought: “binary systems are the critical problem, the either/or, the black/white, gay/straight, Christian/Muslim, you name it. Maybe the problem is that we haven’t evolved into a unified being; not male or female but both. The human body is not the person. Identity is the way the brain operates; it’s memories, it’s sensory input and output. The mind is the person”.

“When Caitlyn Jenner had the most glamorous coming-out moment of all time via the cover ofVanity Fair, it marked a historical moment for many reasons. Not only did it catapult trans awareness to the mainstream, but it also displayed a huge amount of courage, and set an example of inclusivity in a world still blighted by transphobia.

However, as many rightly pointed out, Caitlyn’s experience as a rich, white American trans person is radically different to the experience of trans people without her celebrity status and situation, particularly trans people of colour from low-income backgrounds, who are much more likely to experience violence and hate crimes based on their identity.

In an hour-long podcast discussion with Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace, pandrodgynous musician, avant-garde artist and Throbbing Gristle icon Genesis Breyer P-Orridge echoed the idea that Caitlyn Jenner should be careful about referring to herself as a spokesperson for the wider trans community.

“Apparently Caitlyn is already saying things like, ‘It’s so difficult being a woman and having to decide which designer gown to wear when you go out at night’… That’s not being a woman, that’s being a glamorous Hollywood figure and that’s not how it is for most people. There are lots of teenage kids on the streets of New York who are hustling and risking Aids because they need to get money to transition, and they’re prepared to risk their lives because it’s such a deep need, and they don’t have that back-up system.”

“We’re not saying Caitlyn isn’t courageous in terms of the personal experience, but the way it’s being presented by the media could end up being really, really damaging. We actually saw one thing on the news and Caitlyn’s going, ‘I feel like I can be a spokesperson for the transgendered community.’ And later on she says, ‘I actually don’t know any transsexuals.’ What the fuck, she’s going to be spokesperson? She hasn’t got a clue! She’s been living in her own bubble with her own issues, dealing with them, but she doesn’t understand what it’s like for the ladyboys in Bangkok, or the transsexuals in Japan or people in Russia. She doesn’t know! Stop being a spokesperson.”

Genesis, who transitioned in 1993 to become pandrogynous, or non-gender specific, then shared their own perspective on gender identity. “Binary systems are the critical problem, the either/or, the black/white, gay/straight, Christian/Muslim, you name it. Maybe the problem is that we haven’t evolved into a unified being; not male or female but both. The human body is not the person. Identity is the way the brain operates; it’s memories, it’s sensory input and output. The mind is the person.

Tempo fa ho parlato della dignificazione dei trans all’ interno della cultura di mainstream, prendendo in considerazione anche l’ apparizione di Caitlyn Jenner sulle copertine di Vanity Fair, circostanza da me accolta con plauso. Ne ho pure parlato con uno degli artisti e intellettuali più emblematici del movimento queercore, il regista, fotografo e scrittore Bruce LaBruce che invece – pur apprezzando il mio punto di vista, pieno di speranza e all’ insegna della libertà e dignità di tutti, qualcosa che va ben oltre il gender, mero cliché su cui si è strutturato il pensiero e la dialettica convenzionale – era molto scettico, poiché tutto accadeva in base ai crismi del mainstream quella serie di valori o meglio disvalori su cui si basa la sua cultura. Giorni fa è apparso su Dazed Digital uno scritto in cui un iconico e visionario artista, il pandrogino Genesis P-Orridge – leader dei Throbbing Gristle e degli Psychic TV, che fa parte dell’ aristocrazia dell’ underground ed è uno dei padri della musica industrial -, ha spiegato le ragioni per cui Caitlyn Jenner non possa essere una portavoce. Questo articolo, che sono lieta di condividere, racchiude alcune rilevanti questioni inerenti l’ identità di genere e anche una consapevolezza che nasce dal vibrante pensiero di Genesis: “i sistemi binari sono il problema critico, l’ uno/l’ altro, il nero/ bianco, il gay/eterosessuale, il cristiano/musulmano come si vogliano chiamare. Forse la questione è che non ci siamo evoluti in un essere unito, che non è né maschile, né femminile, ma è ambedue. Il corpo umano non è la persona. L’ identità è il modo in cui il cervello opera, è fatta di ricordi, è input ed output sensoriale. La mente è la persona”.

“Quando Caitlyn Jenner ha avuto il momento di coming-out più glamour di tutti i tempi per effetto della copertina su Vanity Fair, ciò ha rappresentato un momento storico per molteplici ragioni. Non ha soltanto catapultato la coscienza trans nel mainstream, ma ha anche mostrato una enorme dose di coraggio, e stabilito un’ esempio di inclusività in un mondo che è ancora segnato dalla transfobia.

In ogni caso, come molti hanno giustamente osservato, l’ esperienza di Caitlyn da trans americana, ricca, bianca è del tutto diversa dall’ esperienza dei trans che sono privi del suo stato di celebrità e della sua occupazione, in particolare i trans di colore provenienti da contesti a basso reddito, che presumibilmente sperimentano molto di più la violenza e i reati di odio che si basano sulla loro identità.

Nel podcast di una conversazione di un’ ora con Laura Jane Grace di Against Me! , il musicista pandrogino, artista d’ avanguardia ed icona dei Throbbing Gristle Genesis Breyer P-Orridge ha ribadito che Caitlyn Jenner dovrebbe fare attenzione a descriversi come una portavoce per la più grande comunità trans.

“Apparentemente Caitlyn sta già dicendo cose come, ‘è così difficile essere una donna e dovere decider quale abito da sera di quale designer indossare per uscire la sera’… Questo non è essere una donna, è essere un personaggio hollywoodiano glamour e ciò non è così per molte persone. Ci sono un sacco di teenager sulle strade di New York che si prostituiscono e rischiano l’ Aids perché hanno bisogno di avere soldi per il processo di transizione, e sono pronti a rischiare le loro vite perché il loro è un bisogno talmente profondo, e sono privi di quel sistema di back-up.”

“Non stiamo affermando che Caitlyn non sia coraggiosa in termini di esperienza personale, ma il modo in cui ciò è presentato dai mass-media potrebbe essere davvero, notevolmente dannoso. Attualmente abbiamo visto una cosa nelle cronaca e l’ uscita di Caitlyn, ‘sento di poter essere un portavoce per la comunità transgender.’ E dopo afferma, ‘in verità non conosco alcun transessuale.’ E che cazzo, sta per diventare un portavoce? Ne ha la benché minima idea! Sta vivendo nella sua bolla con le sue problematiche, che affronta, ma non comprende quello che passano i ladyboys a Bangkok, o i transessuali in Giappone oppure la gente in Russia. Non lo sa! Smettila di essere un portavoce.

A MASTERPIECE TO HAVE: THE LP “NOTHING HERE NOW BUT THE RECORDINGS” BY WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS

The LP “Nothing here but the new recordings”(Dais Records) is a genuine masterpiece to have. This work arises in the 1980 when Genesis P-Orridge and Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson( there were the times they were part of band Throbbing Gristle) went to New York City to meet up at the fortified apartment, known as The Bunker, the celebrated author and pioneer cultural William S. Burroughs and compiled the experimental sounds work of Burroughs. During those visits Burroughs played his tape recorder experiments featuring is spoken word “cut-ups” and collaged fields recordings from his travels with EVP recording techniques (pioneered by the Latvian intellectual Konstantins Raudine). A work which involved all of these artists and gave rise in 1981 to the album which has never released until 1998 when the celebrated performer artist and poet John Giorno and John Giorno Poetry Systems included the album on a multi-disc retrospective CD box set. Now it comes back, during 2014, year when it recurs the centenary of legendary artist’s birth. The album will be available since January 2015, though it could be possible to make a pre-order of album on the website of Dais Records.

UN CAPOLAVORO DA AVERE: L’ LP “NOTHING HERE NOW BUT THE RECORDINGS” DI WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS

L’ LP “Nothing here but the new recordings”(Dais Records) è un autentico capolavoro da avere. Quest’ opera nasce nel 1980 quando Genesis P-Orridge e Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson( erano i tempi in cui facevano parte della band Throbbing Gristle) si sono recati a New York City per rivedere presso l’ appartamento fortificato, noto come Il Bunker, il celebre scrittore e pioniere della cultura William S. Burroughs e hanno redatto i lavori sonori sperimentali di Burroughs. Durante queste visite Burroughs riproduceva i suoi esperimenti con il registratore comprensivi dei suoi “cut-ups” a parole e registrazioni assemblate, tratte dai suoi viaggi effettuate con le tecniche di registrazione EVP( effettuate pioneristicamente dall’ intellettuale lituano Konstantins Raudine). Un lavoro che ha coinvolto tutti questi artisti e ha dato vita nel 1981 all’ album che non è stato mai pubblicato fino al 1998, quando il famoso performer artist e poeta John Giorno e la John Giorno Poetry Systems ha incluso l’ album in una retrospettiva a più dischi composta da un set di CD. Adesso ritorna, nel 2014, anno in cui ricorre il centenario della nascita del leggendario artista. L’ album sarà disponibile a partire da gennaio 2015, anche se esiste la possibilità di effettuare un preordine dell’ album sul sito web di Dais Records.

FASHION CULTURE: MY VISIT TO THE MODATECA DEANNA(1)

I recently visited the Modateca Deanna in Reggio Emilia, suggestive cathedral of fashion culture, owned by Deanna and Sonia Ferretti Veroni (mother and sister) which is where yesterday it was the renowned knitwear company Miss Deanna, established by the brilliant, powerful, dear friend Deanna Ferretti Veroni. It was an awesome experience to spend one day – and unfortunately is not been enough – to see the library of Modateca, crowded of artworks as the canvas by Salvatore Fiume and many others, enriching its rooms. Time stops when I am in library. Many books have draws my attention and naturally the fashion magazines. A successful experience, I highly recommend of doing to students and insiders for increasing their own culture.

Ho recentemente visitato la Modateca Deanna in Reggio Emilia, suggestiva cattedrale di cultura della moda, di proprietà di Deanna e Sonia Ferretti Veroni (madre e sorella) che è il luogo in cui ieri si trovava la rinomata azienda di maglieria Miss Deanna, fondata dalla brillante, poderosa, cara amica Deanna Ferretti Veroni. È stata una fantastica esperienza passare una giornata – e sfortunatamente non è abbastanza – vedere la biblioteca della Modateca, affollato di opere d’ arte quali le tele di Salvatore Fiume e molti altri che arricchiscono le sue stanze. Il tempo si ferma quando sono in biblioteca. Molti libri hanno catturato la mia attenzione e naturalmente i magazine di moda. Una felice esperienza che raccomando altamente di effettuare a studenti e addetti ai lavori per accrescere la loro cultura.

ART & VISIONS: MARIE LOSIER AT THE CARTIER FOUNDATION

The bright New York filmmaker Marie Losier who made the film “The ballad of Genesis & Lady Jaye”, enchanting documentary about the love story between Genesis P-Orridge and Lady Jaye, will premiere on 29^th April 2013 in Paris at the Cartier Foundation, 8:00 pm, the new films she made on Alan Vega and Peaches being under the sign of music, art and dance, featuring Pauline Curnier Jardin, Julien Langendorff, Amélie Losier, Peaches, Joana Preiss, Jonathan Caouette and Tony Conrad. A not to be missed happening to enjoy a bright artist.

LOVE, DEDICATION & CREATION: “THE BALLAD OF GENESIS AND LADY JAYE”, A MOVIE BY MARIE LOSIER

It has recently released in the USA cinemas “The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye”, the film by Marie Losier, winner of many awards as the Teddy award at the Berlin Film Festival Forum, the Grand Prize in Lisbon at Indilisboa and many other ones, documentary featuring an intimate portrait of the life and work of bright performer artist and pioneer musician Genesis Breyer P-Orridge – front-man of Throbbing Gristle, celebrated industrial, electro band Psychic Tv, later turned into the PTV3 (band celebrating the idea of pleasure as arm, pandroginy as symbol of union and life opposed to the idea of separation and death) – and her wife Lady Jaye – died in 2007 -, with whom he made concrete the idea of “pandroginy”, resulting from a romantic idea, the idea of englobing one with the other – as Genesis P-Orridge asserted -, “becoming one big blob of love”. The idea has arisen from the “cut up” idea in literature by William Burroughs and Brion Gysin and the work they made “The third mind”(Groove Pr, 1982), but they made a further step, from the third mind we made the third person, resorting to the cosmetic surgery in order to be more similar as possible, two half of a new human being, P-Orridge, a new entity existing just when Genesis and Lady Jaye are together. The movie is essentially a vibrant tribute to love or rather – as Genesis P-Orridge says – “the greatest love affair of all times”, dedication, but also gives precious reflections about the idea of beauty and the performative process connecting innate beauty to the artificial one.

É stato recentemente pubblicato nei cinema statunitensi “The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye”, la pellicola di Marie Losier, vincitrice di molteplici premi quali il Teddy award al Film Festival Forum di Berlino, il Gran Premio a Lisbona durante Indilisboa e molti altri, documentario che ha quale protagonista un intimo ritratto della vita e opera del brillante performer e pionieristico musicista Genesis Breyer P-Orridge – leader dei Throbbing Gristle, della celebre band industrial, electro Psychic Tv, successivamente trasformata nei PTV3 (band che celebra l’ idea del piacere quale arma, la pandroginia quale simbolo dell’ unione e della vita, contrapposta all’ idea di separazione e morte) – e sua moglie Lady Jaye – morta nel 2007 – con la quale ha concretizzato l’ idea di pandroginia, derivante da un’ idea romantica, “l’ idea di inglobarsi l’ uno con l’ altro” – come ha affermato Genesis P-Orridge -, “diventando un unico grande blob d’ amore”. L’ idea è nata dal concetto di “cut up” nella letteratura ad opera di William Burroughs e Brion Gysin e l’ opera da loro realizzata “The third mind”( Groove Pr, 1982), ma costoro hanno effettuato un passo ulteriore, dal terzo uomo hanno creato la terza persona, ricorrendo alla chirurgia plastica al fine di essere il più possibile simili, due metà di un nuovo essere umano, P- Orridge, una nuova entità che esiste soltanto quando Genesis P-Orridge e Lady Jaye sono insieme. Il film è essenzialmente un vibrante tributo all’ amore o meglio – come dice Genesis P-Orridge – alla “più grande storia d’ amore di tutti i tempi”, alla dedizione, ma offre anche preziose riflessioni sull’ idea della bellezza e il processo performativo che connette la bellezza innata a quella artificiale.

GENESIS P-ORRIDGE HOSTS “IF…” BY LINDSAY ANDERSON AT NEW YORK IFC CENTER

Il cantautore, musicista e artista inglese Genesis P-Orridge – fondatore delle band anarchiche di musica industrial Throbbing Gristle e Psychic TV celebre per la sperimentazione su sé stesso del “cut up”, la tecnica di scrittura del suo amico William Bourroghs, ideando la pandroginia, fusione di due identità sessuali in una che si basa sull’idea di ricreare il proprio corpo e la sessualità mediante ogni mezzo che l’essere umano ha a sua disposizione – presenterà il 15 novembre 2010, ore 20:00, a New York presso l’ IFC Center in occasione dell’evento “Queer, art, film” la proiezione di “If…” di Lindsay Anderson, una pellicola – con il carismatico Malcolm McDowell – che dipinge una sconvolgente satira sociale sui costumi del fascismo inglese, della tortura nei collegi scolastici e ha un significato particolare per il presentatore che è cresciuto in Inghilterra ed ha sperimentato le circostanze “violente” – come egli ha affermato – “e mentalmente malate” raccontate dal film.
