Modesign/Fashion at Iuav 2013 ended with a series of smashing initiatives under the sign of fashion and its culture. The last day started with “Per una fotografia italiana di moda”, talk which was held at the Treviso TRA (Treviso, Ricerca, Arte) cultural association moderated by Saul Marcadent with a panel of experts which included Maria Luisa Frisa, Alan Chies, Andrea Batilla, Stefan Pollak, Anja Aronoowsky-Cronenberg, Alessio Ascari and Sabrina Ciofi who talked about media, magazines and independence. The focus of the talk was independence and the freedom of experimentation and involving emerging creatives.

That is a true and reasonable issue, though the independence as value in action should concern the whole circuit which gives rise to a magazine, even if it’s hard to commercialize an independent magazine without using the mainstream circuit of distribution. It’s hard, but it’s not impossible (otherwise the independence and values such as integrity and vision are just a charming artifice, hiding a dynamic of the mainstream press which, considering its role and position, frequently inserted in big group of media companies, should act differently, in the name of big numbers. Independence would be the only means for justifying the existence of a different product, resulting from its contents and it would be a too weak basis).

Anja Aronowsky-Cronenberg, the editor-in-chief of magazine Vestoj, talked about her work experience, focusing on the Vestoj’s Manifesto which forbids any advertising (the most sensitive topic which is the condition of health and long life of a magazine) and represents the compromise which a magazine has to do, balancing and addressing the information given to the needs coming from the brands that paid for it), something I appreciated very much. (After all the times are ready to give rise to a new marketing strategy which is ethical inside out the realm of media). The talk ended with the visit at the exhibition “Flou, six photographers for six independent magazines”, curated by Saul Marcadent which included a beautiful portrait pic of Suzy Menkes.

Later in the early afternoon I visited another exhibition, “Linen Yarn. The event has shared with another event, the launch of the fashion tradeshow event Origin, Passion and Beliefs, created by Fiera di Vicenza and Not Just a Label and has been a successful chance to appreciate the laudable work made by Iuav students as Sophia Crema and Alma Ricci as well as to see Stefan Siegel of NJAL.

The day ended with two fashion shows, the Iuav Graduation show, curated by Kinkaleri which took place at the Treviso Edmondo De Amicis elementary school and the MA Graduation show, a fashion performance curated by Kinkaleri which was held at the Treviso Chamber of Commerce. The fashion shows displayed  the excellence of the emerging creativity from Iuav in the realm of menswear, presenting outfits that were ready to be commercialized and have nothing less than the products by emerging brands I saw recently during the latest fashion tradeshow events. That is a relevant result got by a public institution which trains young creatives and I celebrate as to study for becoming a fashion designer is a chance everyone should have beyond its own balance restrictions.

REFINEMENT & EMERGING CREATIVITY IN TREVISO: “FASHION AT IUAV” 2012

The exhibition “In the making”, curated by Maria Luisa Frisa at Fashion Design Faculty of Iuav University of Venice

Refinement, emerging talents, bright and coherent work is the essence of what the University Iuav of Venice is about. The public institution trains young people and is headed by the fashion curator/critic/author/professor, Maria Luisa Frisa. Her initiatives have a contemporary and international concept which is oriented around a leitmotiv I celebrate – featured in “Fashion at Iuav”, the event was recently held in Treviso and included three events: the exhibition “In the making” at the Iuav University of Venice Fashion Design Faculty, curated by Maria Luisa Frisa which presented the works of the fashion design workshops of the three-year Fashion Design Degree Course, “End of the year show” at Palazzo Giacomelli, curated by Fabio Quaranta which hosted a series of catchy installations and tableaux-vivant and the refined “Graduation show” at Riviera Santa Margherita, directed by Mario Lupano and Cristina Zamagni, featuring the works of graduate students from the Fashion Design Bachelor of Arts and Master Advanced Course. The graduates offered many interesting proposals: “The new comers 2012” showcased in several boutiques, turning the city into a little cathedral of fashion. A laudable event I enjoyed and shared with my friend Simone Sbarbati, editor of blog  Frizzi Frizzi(www.frizzifrizzi.it).

The exhibition “In the making”, curated by Maria Luisa Frisa at Fashion Design Faculty of Iuav University of Venice

IUAV OPENING DAY, A DAY CELEBRATING YOUNG CONTEMPORARY FASHION

Maria Luisa Frisa

I was very pleased to be present at the one day event recently held in Treviso at the Fashion Design Faculty – directed by the bright author, fashion curator and critic Maria Luisa Frisa – of Iuav University. I appreciated along with Simone Sbarbati – editor of blog Frizzi Frizzi – the fashion suggestions created by its students during the fashion show – which ended with the smashing track by John Lennon “Give peace a chance”. The show was held at the Teatro Comunale along with the wonderful performances and installations at the rooms of Faculty that were curated by the awesome Judith Clark, showcasing the works of students who attended the laboratories headed by the professors: Fabio Quaranta, Silvano Arnoldo, Bouboutic, Maria Vittoria Sargentini, Anthony Knight, Carlo Contrada, Angelo Figus and many other vibrant creatives. The success of event is in great part due to the laudable work developed by Maria Luisa Frisa and the institution which she heads. The end result makes clear the concrete, contemporary and detailed approach by a public Institution, forming talents, culture about fashion and the construction of fashion products under the sign of a contemporary mood.

IUAV OPENING DAY, UNA GIORNATA CHE CELEBRA LA MODA GIOVANE CONTEMPORANEA

Judith Clark
